TEXT: PROVERBS 6:1–35
MEMORY VERSE: “Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.” (KJV) (Proverbs 14:19)
Nothing destroys a person’s life like sin. Sin is a killer; sin is a saboteur. The devil uses sin to sabotage God’s plans for people’s lives. As powerful as prayer is, God does not answer every prayer—sin can constitute a clog in the wheel of your progress. The psalmist said in Psalm 66:18, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Whatever could make God block His ears to your prayers must be destroyed. The prayer of a sinner is an abomination before God. The word of God says, “He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination” (Proverbs 28:9). God’s word admonishes us to flee from iniquity; turning away your ear from this will make your prayer an abomination before God. Proverbs 15:8 even says, “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.” It is not enough to make sacrifices; a sacrifice made in sin has lost its efficacy because of this Scripture. It is only the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous that avail much. No matter the nature of the sin, it is of utmost importance that we repent genuinely and sincerely. The psalmist talked about the sin of the tongue in Psalm 39:1: “I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.”
We must be determined to turn away from sin as we rely on God’s power to help us. It is not by struggling but by yielding ourselves to the Holy Spirit. God does not want us to give excuses for sin or rationalize it in any way; He simply admonishes us to depart from iniquity. Paul, writing to Timothy, a young preacher, admonished him to flee all manner of youthful lusts. Apostle Paul further declared, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
